Really, do we need the SSN? Yes. We're a legitimate and reputable law firm, and just like you need to tell a doctor your birthday and personal medicial info, when you see an attorney about your debt problems, he needs your Social Security number. 

Put a different way, if you're like most people I see, your credit is already pretty bad and most accounts are already turned off. Believe me, even if I wanted to, what could I possibly do?
